Tax Reform Survey
The Senate is preparing to consider the companion tax bill to the version that recently passed the House. While I believe we absolutely must reform our outdated tax code, I have serious concerns with this bill's effect on Illinois, which is why I voted against it.
In particular, I don't agree with the Senate bill's elimination of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, which is used by more than 1 in 3 Illinois taxpayers 85 percent of which are middle income. The Tax Policy Center estimates half of all taxpayers will pay more by 2027 under this plan. I'm also worried about the fiscal impact of this bill, which is estimated by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office to add an additional $1.7 trillion to our nation's debt.
I hope in the days ahead my colleagues will instead open the tax reform debate to bipartisan debate and amendments. I remain always ready and willing to work across the aisle to achieve responsible tax reform that will grow our economy and secure our future.
