Rep. Schneider Calls on Congress to Act on Vice President Biden’s Recommendations
In support of Vice President Joe Biden’s recommendations, announced today by President Obama, U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement calling on his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to come together and enact common-sense legislation to curb gun violence.
“The President today released a series of sensible proposals aimed at dramatically reducing the number of violent crimes committed with guns, and I encourage all of my fellow Members of Congress to act immediately to help turn these recommendations into law. I echo the President’s plan to close the gun show loophole, extending basic background checks to all retail gun sales; to enact a new Assault Weapons Ban, which will take deadly military-style weapons off the streets; to outlaw the sale of high-capacity magazines that accommodate dozens of rounds of ammunition; and to enhance the national system of background checks, combining information from all 50 states. We hear far too often the tragic stories of gun violence--from shootings in Aurora and Tucson to the tragedies at Oak Creek and Sandy Hook--and yet, far too often we see little or no action in response. Today, the President's recommendations provide a measured, reasonable first step to begin tackling gun violence, preventing similar tragedies in the future.”
