Schneider Statement on Wayne LaPierre’s Resignation as NRA CEO
WASHINGTON— Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement following Wayne LaPierre’s resignation as NRA CEO:
“For years, I have called out the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) long record of abuse of its tax-exempt status, including a report I released in 2020 detailing many of the NRA’s violations. Wayne LaPierre has spun a tangled web of self-dealing and corruption, pilfering the coffers of the organization to pay for lavish personal trips and expenses. His resignation is long overdue, but there is much more work to be done to end the epidemic of gun violence,” said Schneider. “Even with this news, the NRA remains a powerful and harmful influence in our battle against gun violence. We must continue our work to hold accountable bad actors – like the NRA – who abuse their privileged tax-exempt status. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, it is my duty to ensure that American taxpayers (and NRA dues paying members) are not unwittingly subsidizing the NRA’s leadership’s corrupt schemes.”
Background:
Schneider, as member of the Ways & Means Committee, has advocated for oversight of the NRA, and released a report, Cheating the American Taxpayer: NRA's Record of Self-Dealing, Corruption and Abuse of its Tax-Exempt Status, detailing self-dealing, corruption, and other actions by the National Rifle Association of America (NRA). Schneider has also received an “F” rating from the NRA for his support of common sense gun violence prevention bills.
