Schneider Slams GOP Plan to Make SALT Deduction Restriction Permanent
New study shows Lake and Cook County in top three of all Illinois counties in use of SALT deduction
Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL) highlighted just released data that illustrates the negative effects to Tenth District families of President Trump and Congressional Republican's decision to limit the State and Local Tax Deduction to $10,000 in last year's tax reform bill.
The new IRS data shows that in both Lake and Cook County, the SALT deduction was heavily utilized in 2016 and on average families claimed far above the new $10,000 limit.
- In Lake County, 42 percent of tax filers claimed the SALT deduction averaging $18,369 – the highest average deduction in any county in Illinois.
- In Cook County, 31 percent of tax filers claimed the SALT deduction averaging $12,949 – the third highest average deduction in any county in Illinois.
"While everyone may be entitled to their own opinion, they do not get their own facts," said Schneider. "This new data shows clearly that Tenth District families who have long relied on the State and Local Tax Deduction will be hurt by the punishing new limits included in last year's tax bill. The decision by President Trump and Congressional Republicans to shrink this important deduction was a punitive measure to put the burden of a tax cut for the most fortunate on the backs of payer states like Illinois. Rather than making this misguided change permanent, I urge Republican leaders to end their go-it-alone partisan approach and instead allow input from Democrats to craft true tax reform that is responsible and does not penalize working families."
Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brad (R-TX) said he intends to make the cap of the SALT deduction permanent in the next round of tax reform.
