Schneider Travel Restriction Amendment Included in Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enhancement Act
Bill to sanction supporters of Iran’s ballistic missile and weapon transfers was reported out of House Foreign Affairs Committee today
Today, an amendment offered by U.S. Representative Brad Schneider at the House Foreign Affairs Committee was included in H.R. 1698, the Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enhancement Act.
The Schneider Amendment would require a report from the President on information regarding violations of the travel restrictions on sanctioned Iranian individuals per UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2231 and any exemptions that have been approved by the Security Council. This follows troubling news reports that Iran's Commander of the IRGC's Quds Force, General Qasem Soleimani, has traveled to Russia in violation of UNSCR 2231.
"I believe we must clearly and fully articulate, as matter of national policy, that the United States will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon, and that we will aggressively work to confront Iran's malign activities in the region and around the world," said Schneider in remarks at the Committee markup. "Iran is a bad actor in a volatile region and its agents continue to sow instability…These restrictions [in UNSCR 2231] were put in place for good reason and we deserve to know whether in fact violations have occurred."
The Schneider Amendment was included in an en bloc package, and the bill was reported out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee today.
