Statement on Affordable Care Act Court Ruling

December 17, 2018

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement responding to the ruling of a federal judge in Texas that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional:

"The Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act legislatively, but they have not stopped working behind the scenes to weaken and undermine the law. While disappointing, it is no surprise that President Trump is now celebrating a ruling that jeopardizes health coverage and vital protections for millions of Americans.

"This ruling is an egregious example of activist judicial overreach that is likely to be overturned on appeal. The Affordable Care Act will stay in effect during this appeal, but the law remains under assault from an Administration willing to remove protections for people with pre-existing conditions, promote inadequate and incomplete insurance plans, and slash funding for open enrollment advertising and assistance.

"Americans' basic health care is at stake. The Administration has an obligation to end the sabotage and instead defend the law. More importantly, I encourage the President to work with the incoming Democratic majority to develop health care solutions that lower cost, improve care, and expand coverage to more Americans."
