Greetings from sunny Chicago. I am happy to be home this weekend before returning back to Washington, DC for the Presidential Inauguration.

On Monday the nation will inaugurate our 47th President of the United States—the 60th time our nation will celebrate the extraordinary and uninterrupted tradition of the transfer of power on Inauguration Day. As a member of Congress, elected by the voters of Illinois’s Tenth Congressional District, I believe it is my responsibility—but also my privilege—to witness that transfer of power. Elections are the foundation of our democratic republic, and irrespective of who wins or loses, we are still one nation united in celebrating the rights and protections established by the Constitution.

I welcome any constituents heading to Washington, DC for inauguration—my office received more than 1,000 ticket requests. My office was able to offer around 150 tickets to constituents interested in attending the inauguration.

Following inauguration, President Trump has said he is preparing to issue around 100 executive orders on his first day as President. I am preparing for this as well and am ready to stand up to any efforts that encroach on our freedoms, weaken our communities, or threaten our economy. You can expect to hear more from me in the coming days and weeks as the direction of this new administration takes shape.

President Joe Biden

Meanwhile, President Biden has used his last few weeks in office to reflect on his career of public service and highlight some of his most significant accomplishments. I thought I would also take a moment to recollect some of the accomplishments of his Administration and how they will impact the US for decades (and perhaps generations) to come.

President Biden moved into the White House in 2021 in the middle of a pandemic with our economy reeling and Americans desperate to get back to normal life. COVID vaccines were slowly rolling out across the country, but it was not clear when, or if, the pandemic would end.

President Biden’s first major achievement was passage of the American Rescue Plan on March 10, 2021, which he signed into law the next day. That legislation got shots into people’s arms, kids back to school and their parents back to work. It provided desperately needed resources to first responders, health care providers and essential workers. It effectively laid the foundation to lift the country out of the pandemic and led the way for the US economy to emerge from COVID better than any other country. He leaves office with the American economy, in the words the The Economist Magazine, “the envy of the world.”

News Article

An October 2024 edition of The Economist

President Biden rebuilt America’s infrastructure. His Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which I was proud to vote for, is a once-in-a-generation investment that will quite literally help our communities for decades.

President Biden ensured America leads the world in science and innovation. The CHIPS and Science Act, another crucial piece of legislation that I was proud to vote for, is ensuring we build the technologies of the future here in America—and create good-paying, lasting jobs throughout the nation.

President Biden lowered healthcare costs. The Inflation Reduction Act lowered the cost of prescription drugs and capped the cost of insulin for seniors. This year, as he departs office, seniors will still reap the benefits of his transformative leadership—as of January 1, Medicare recipients will save thousands with the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap on prescription drugs.

The Biden Administration created 16.6 million new jobs, stoked historic wage growth, and got inflation under control, bringing it down to near pre-pandemic levels.

President Biden was far from perfect and there will be plenty written in the future about his shortcomings as well as his successes. But Joe Biden’s leadership as President has been transformative and will be felt for decades to come. I thank him for his commitment, service, and love for this nation.

On the Lone-Hope For Ceasefire and Hostage Release Deal in the Middle East

Ceasefire

A deal between Hamas and Israel to pause fighting in Gaza and return 33 hostages, including two Americans, was at last announced and should be finalized today (January 17th). This deal, initially presented by President Biden last May and negotiated over many months, opens the door for an end to the war. There are several more things that must happened for the true end to the war to be reached—in particular the return of all the hostages still held in Gaza. We cannot rest until every hostage, living and dead, is reunited with their families—families in the US, Israel and around the world. We also cannot shrink from the challenges of seeking a new, secure, and peace-filled future for the Middle East.

I am deeply grateful for both the steadfast efforts of President Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and their dedicated team, and the vital support from the incoming administration. The joint efforts reaffirm America’s unshakable commitment to the safety of our allies and to building a more peaceful future for the entire region.

Telephone Town Hall

Congressman Schneider Talks on a Telephone Call

I hosted my first telephone town hall of the year earlier this week. It was wonderful to hear from many of you about the issues that you are concerned about and the questions you have about what is happening here in Congress. I received and answered questions about immigration and plans to secure our southern border, the impact of the incoming administration on crucial benefits like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and how I will stand up for the LGBTQ+ community. You can listen to the telephone town hall, including my update on what’s happening here in Washington as well as questions from constituents, on my Facebook page.

I so deeply value hearing from you in these telephone town halls and just when you give my office a call or send me an email. I plan to host more events over the course of the year–the best way to stay up to date is to keep subscribing to this e-newsletter!

Please keep reading to learn more about happenings here at home and in Washington.

American Legion Post 771 Chili Cook Off

Congressman Schneider Speaks to a Veteran

Nothing is quite as good on a cold winter's day like a hearty bowl of chili, especially when it's shared with friends, neighbors, and our community's veterans. Gurnee's American Legion Post 771 hosted its 20th annual chili cook-off, a friendly competition of some of the community's best cooks.

North Suburban YMCA Youth Explorer Expo

I loved visiting the North Suburban YMCA in Northbrook for the first-ever Youth Explorer Expo. It was a fun break from the winter cold. I especially enjoyed learning about underwater research using floating cameras from several middle schoolers who are collaborating with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

THE LATEST IN WASHINGTON, DC

SALT Caucus

Image
The "SALT" Caucus Meets

The bipartisan SALT Caucus had our first meeting of the 119th Congress. The SALT Caucus is focused on repealing a harmful cap on the state and local tax deduction that was put in place by the 2017 Trump tax bill. This cap has effectively resulted in double taxation by forcing constituents in high tax states to pay federal tax on money they have already paid to state and local governments.

This week, I joined several SALT Caucus members to introduce the SALT Deductibility Act, which would repeal the SALT cap and bring much needed relief taxpayers in Illinois and across the country.

New Democrat Coalition Meeting with House Democratic Leadership

New Democrat Coalition Meeting with House Democratic Leadership

In my first official meeting as chair of the New Democrat Coalition, we were joined by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar to talk about priorities for the 119th Congress. We had a robust discussion with a standing room only crowd, with almost all of the New Dems' 110 members (a majority of the 215 Democrats in Congress) in attendance. I look forward to sharing more about the New Dems in future newsletters

Ways & Means Hearing on Trump Tax Bill Expiration

Image
Congressman Schneider Way and Means Hearing

Congress is rewriting the tax code this year as the 2017 Trump tax bill expires. I spoke in the House Ways and Means Committee about the opportunity we have to imagine a tax code that both responsibly addresses our nation's debt and helps small businesses, parents, and hardworking Americans not only get by but get ahead—we can make the American dream more real for more Americans. I'm hopeful my Republicans will reach out to Democrats this Congress to work collaboratively to create a tax code that serves us better. You can watch my remarks on my Facebook page.

IN CLOSING

Curtis Poses In Front of NASA Equipment For Photo

I was pleased to learn while reading the Daily Herald this week that Gurnee native Curtis Szajkovics will serve as a flight controller with NASA contractor Firefly Aerospace, helping to guide spacecrafts out of our atmosphere. Szajkovics will be helping pilot the “Blue Ghost” Lunar lander this Wednesday as it launches from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Growing up in Lake County, Szajkovics has come a long way, from rocketry and astronomy clubs at school to working at launching sites. Szajkovics, keep making the 10th district proud!

Stay strong, stay safe, stay healthy.
Sincerely,
