10th News: Standing up to an Extreme Agenda

February 15, 2023
Brad's Newsletter

Regular readers of this newsletter know that I talk a lot about bipartisanship. Not only because I think it’s good politics, but because I believe that the only way to create sustainable solutions to the greatest challenges we face is by bringing people together across differing perspectives to work together towards common ground.

Unfortunately, we find ourselves at a moment when extremists seem to have unprecedented sway. That was on full display last week as the new Republican majority brought forward what can only be called messaging bills catering to the most extreme elements in their party. First, they introduced and passed a bill to cut enforcement at the IRS, giving a break to tax cheats and costing law abiding taxpayers nearly $200 billion! They then stood up a new committee upon the demands of Rep. Jim Jordan that has virtually unlimited power to investigate whatever Mr. Jordan deems of interest.  And they closed out the week with more attacks on women’s rights, including a new attempt to criminalize abortion with no exceptions.

I voted against all these extreme bills. Last Monday, I spoke on the floor against the ill conceived anti-tax cheat bill (you can watch my full speech against this bill here.)

However, I did vote in favor of what I consider an imperfect, but hopefully sincere bill to stand up a committee to thoughtfully address the threats (economic and security) posed by China. I will continue to stand up and call out the extremists agenda, while remaining committed to seeking and supporting the common ground where we can get things done.

Back at home, on Monday we celebrated Martin Luther King Day.  It was a privilege to attend events in Highland Park and Waukegan.

A Personal Thank You

Lastly, I am sad to share that my dad passed away yesterday. I want to thank everyone who sent incredibly kind notes and good wishes for my father and my family. Know that you give me and my entire family strength at a difficult time.

I was very fortunate to spend some quality time with my dad over the past three weekends. We reminisced about old memories, looked at pictures from my childhood, and even his early years. And we watched a lot of football. I thought I would share a memory that is most special to me.

These photos are from 1982 at the peak of Vail Pass.  It was the first time either of us had ridden to the top of the mountain.  My dad would go on to become an avid cyclist and ride to the top of many more mountains. His perseverance, his sacrifice, integrity and resilience all had a profound influence on me. His lesson was, and will always be that you can do anything, as long as you put your heart and soul into achieving your goals.

Remembering Dr. King

do-event

As I noted, on Monday, our nation recognized and honored Dr. King's memory and legacy of service to others. For the fourteenth consecutive year, Highland Park hosted a service day (though this was the first in person celebration since 2020). It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages come together and very special to be back in person to greet so many old friends.

I also dropped in on the Springs Academy Prep conversation at the Waukegan Library to share reflections about Martin Luther King Jr. Day with students. It was truly special to share in the heartfelt conversation.

The Illinois Assault-Style Weapons Ban

I am proud that Illinois has passed an Assault-Style Weapons Ban. Congress must follow Illinois's example and pass legislation to keep our children safe at school, in church and at parades like Highland Park. I am grateful for State Representative Bob Morgan's leadership which was essential in getting this bill passed. To learn more about this lifesaving legislation click here.

A Personal Thank You Write Valentines for Veterans

A small gesture like a Valentine's card is a much-appreciated way to let our district's veterans know they are loved and appreciated. My office has launched its annual "Valentines for Vets" program to thank those who have selflessly served our country.

Constituents can drop off or mail cards to my Lincolnshire office: 111 Barclay Blvd, Ste 200, Lincolnshire IL 60069 by February 10th, 2023.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WASHINGTON - GOOD NEWS ON HEALTH CARE

This week members are home working in our districts so things are quiet in Washington.  I do, however have one piece of good news: health insurance enrollment through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is up 13% — a record. Expanded health care access saves lives. I will always fight to protect the ACA. You can read more about that here.
