SPEAKING OUT FOR AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION
President Trump's abrupt decision to fire FBI Director James Comey amid an ongoing investigation into the President's campaign should trouble every American concerned about the integrity of our elections. I've been calling for an independent investigation into the Russian effort to interfere in our elections since January, and I think the events of last week make the need even more urgent.
That's why I joined with several of my colleagues in a joint press conference to demand a full, complete and truly independent investigation of the Russians' effort to interfere in the 2016 election. This isn't about partisanship: both parties equally rely on free and fair elections, protected from threats of interference by Russia or any other adversary. An independent investigation will give the American public confidence that we have done all we can to learn the lessons from last year to protect future elections.

BRINGING TOGETHER COMMUNITY LEADERS ON OPIOID EPIDEMIC
Last Thursday I was pleased to by joined by my friend and colleague, Congressman Mike Quigley, for a roundtable discussion with patients, doctors, advocates and other community leaders to discuss the epidemic of opioid addiction that is afflicting Illinois and the country.
I convened this panel to highlight introduction of the Opioid PACE Act (Preventing Addiction through Continuing Education). Congressman Quigley is also a co-sponsor of this bill that would better equip doctors to prevent, identify, and treat substance use disorders by requiring continuing education for medical professionals that prescribe opioids for pain management.
At the roundtable, we listened to the stories from individuals and family members who have personally felt the toll of opioid abuse, as well as the perspectives of the medical community and local government leaders attempting to respond to the crisis. It's clear the only way we will make progress against this epidemic is through close coordination with all of these stakeholders and by treating substance use disorder like the disease it is.
