Memorial Day is an important time to pause, remember, and give thanks for the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I hope you and your family had a meaningful and restful holiday.

Please read on for updates from last week, including new legislation to address veteran homelessness and an invitation to this Thursday's hiring event in Des Plaines.

We owe it to the brave men and women we honor on Memorial Day to better serve their comrades — our veterans. We must dedicate ourselves to serving them even half as well as they've served us.

Last week, I was proud to introduce the Housing Our Heroes Act with three of my colleagues to help veterans organizations buy, renovate, and repurpose abandoned properties into housing for homeless veterans. This bipartisan bill presents a win-win commonsense solution to help both our veterans find a safe place to call home, while also supporting the revitalization of our communities by renovating previously abandoned houses.

PROTECTING DACA RECIPIENTS

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee considered draconian new immigration legislation that would label vast swaths of our communities as criminals for being undocumented. Young people who came to this country as children and have applied for deferred-action (DACA) are not criminals. They are the products of our schools, part of the fabric of our communities, and important to the future growth and success of our country. I offered an amendment that would exempt DACA recipients from this bill, and I'll continue to fight for commonsense, comprehensive reform.
