As we approach the end of the year, Congress has an extraordinarily long to-do list, including funding the government, setting spending levels for next year, reauthorizing the Children's Health Insurance Program, and finally passing the DREAM Act. The House and Senate have also gone to conference on a partisan tax bill that would have far-reaching and particularly negative consequences for Illinois.

I want to hear from you. Please reach out and make your voice heard on any of these pending items by calling our office at (202) 225-4835 or sending an email.

This issue of our weekly update contains information on my efforts to defend our local gun safety laws from the dangerous concealed carry reciprocity legislation that passed the House on Thursday, as well as an invitation to our next Congress On Your Corner in Glenview.

Finally, with the holidays coming, we are collecting cards to distribute to servicemembers who will spend this season far from home and family. Thanks for reading!

DEFENDING LOCAL GUN SAFETY LAWS

It was incredibly disheartening to see the House vote to dangerously expand Concealed Carry Reciprocity last week. Put simply, this bill undermines Illinois gun safety standards, allowing someone from a state with the loosest permitting to carry a concealed firearm across the country, regardless of our local laws.

The gun violence wracking our country daily deserves a commonsense response, not an undermining of the basic regulations we currently have in place. Last week, I offered an amendment which would allow Illinois to continue to enforce our own commonsense standards, such as preventing someone with two or more DUIs in five years from receiving a concealed carry permit. You can watch my testimony here.

This bill is a setback, but we can't, and won't give up the fight to improve the safety of our communities.
