Dear Friends,

Did you know that Earth Day was this weekend? I'm proud of our work over the last year to protect critical funding for our Great Lakes from proposed cuts by President Trump, as well as to address the threat of invasive species. But there's still far more to do to confront global climate change and conserve our environment. Unfortunately, many of the actions of the current Administration – from withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement to loosening emission standards – move us in the wrong direction at precisely the time we need to be making progress. I hope Earth Day was an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to each doing our part to preserve our precious planet for generations to come.

Please continue reading for an invite to an information session I'm hosting in Round Lake next week for students and families seeking to better understand federal financial aid opportunities, a last call for donations for care packages for troops serving overseas, and a recap of the past week.

NEED HELP WITH FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID?

Pictured here over the weekend with some of the young people competing with Illinois 4-H at John T. Magee Middle School to design "Envirobots" to address environmental health challenges.

The rising cost of higher education is one of the issues I hear about most from constituents. And while the process of applying for federal financial aid can be confusing, there may be more resources available than you think.

Tuesday of next week, I'm hosting an information session in Round Lake with the Department of Education to share information on the FAFSA and Federal Student Aid. RSVP here! Federal Student Aid, administered through the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. Annually, the office provides more than $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds each year to more than 13 million students paying for college or career school.

LAST CALL: DONATE SUPPLIES FOR CARE PACKAGES FOR MILITARY SERVICEMEMBERS

More donations are rolling in for care packages for overseas servicemembers through Help USA Troops, an Arlington Heights-based non-profit organization. We're proud to serve as a donation site, and you can drop off supplies at our Lincolnshire Office (111 Barclay Blvd, Suite 200) until Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP

I was glad to join the community Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmaut) 70th Anniversary celebration at North Shore Congregation Israel (pictured here with Israeli Consul General to Chicago Aviv Ezra, Jewish National Fund president Deb Lust Zaluda and past president Scott Gendell.). President Truman made certain that the United States was the first country to recognize the new State of Israel. Seventy years later, the unbreakable bonds between our countries—security, economic, cultural and more—are as strong as ever.

Last week was also National Volunteer Week. I joined the team from Comcast Cares to help out at A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center, which does important work in our community to reduce domestic violence and care for the survivors.

I joined Lake County Opioid Initiative to share an update on federal efforts to address the epidemic. I also met Browser, the newest addition to the Lake County State's Attorney Office. Browser is a specially trained dog able to locate hidden electronics.

Last Friday I had the chance to visit Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago and participate in the new recruit graduation ceremony as Reviewing Officer. It was my incredible honor to speak to our Navy's newest sailors as they embark on their career.

It was very encouraging to see so many members of the community out this weekend at the Race to Zero 5K in Libertyville to support Zacharias Sexual Abuse Center, which offers care and healing to survivors and seeks to end sexual violence.

Please continue to stay in touch and share your thoughts, either by calling our DC office at (202) 225-4835 or emailing via our website.

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,
