Newsletter: News from the 10th

October 22, 2018
Brad's Newsletter

Before talking about last week, I want to flag some important dates looking forward.

First, early voting begins today, October 22, for the November 6 general election. Some key facts to know about early voting:

  • You can vote at any early voting location in the county where you live,
  • You do not need to provide an excuse or reason why you cannot vote on Election Day,
  • Government-issued photo ID is not required, and
  • Grace Registration is available for unregistered voters at any early voting site.

You can find an early voting site near you on the websites for Cook County and Lake County. Voting is among our most important rights as citizens in a democracy, and early voting is an excellent and convenient way to make your voice heard.

Second, onNovember 9, I am excited to host our second annual Veteran's Breakfast to kick off the Veteran's Day weekend. This is another opportunity to honor those in our communities who served, and share some of the ways my office and local veteran organizations can be of assistance. The breakfast is at Crist's Rey St. Martin College Prep in Waukegan, and is free and open to all veterans in Illinois's Tenth Congressional District. More details are listed below.

As for the week that was, it was another very busy week throughout the district, including visits to Round Lake Beach, Mundelein, Waukegan, Glenview, Gurnee, Wadsworth, North Chicago, Grayslake and Northbrook. One of the highlights was running into students I met during school visits earlier this month at various event around the district. It's inspiring to see these young people engaged in our community and I really enjoy the opportunity to hear from them, and their parents, every chance I get.

Please read on for updates from my week working at home in our district. Additionally, we're still accepting RSVPs for our Medicare Part D Help Sessions this November– sign-up today!

CONSTITUENT SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: HELP RECOVERING MEDALS

Our office worked with John Wensch of Winthrop Harbor to acquire medals that his late father, a World War II veteran, earned in the Pacific Theater. I'm grateful for the service of John's father, and glad we could help honor his memory in this way.

If you need help with a federal agency – from Medicare and Social Security to immigration and the VA – please contact our office in Lincolnshire at (847) 383-4870.

100 PERCENT SCORE ON LGBTQ EQUALITY ISSUES

Last week, I was proud to announce that my legislative record on LGBTQ equality issues has earned a 100 percent score from Human Rights Campaign. The Fair and Equal Housing Act, bipartisan legislation that I helped introduce to prevent housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, was one of the bills featured in the scorecard. I will continue to stand up to efforts to undermine these hard fought rights or to discriminate against our fellow Americans because of who they are or who they love.

WEEKLY WRAP-UP

During our most recent #BradAtYourBusiness, I appreciated hearing the perspective of Rick Larsen and the team at American Outfitters LTD on the opportunities and challenges facing local businesses. They've been producing t-shirts, banners, and other promotion material in the Waukegan area since 1975.

Thank you Washington Early Learning Center for inviting me to visit during your parent-teacher conference day and meet with community members.

I had a wonderful visit to Heart of the City in Waukegan. Their program increases access to soccer for Lake County students to inspire kids to be competitive on the field, successful in the classroom, and productive in the community. A great organization!

It was great to see young people in the Glenbrook South High School Interact Club getting ready to serve a meal to community members in need.

I was glad to be in Round Lake for the annual chili supper to support Round Lake Area BEST and Round Lake Area Exchange Club.

I joined volunteers at Growing Healthy Veterans constructing a "Hoop House" greenhouse in Gurnee this weekend The organization works to engage veterans in agricultural projects to enhance their physical health, overall wellness, and that of their families and communities.

There were great costumes over the weekend at the North Suburban YMCA - Northbrook Halloween Spooktacular!

I was glad to join the Exchange Club of Grayslake for their annual pancake breakfast and support their service in the community. Also caught up with WRLR 98.3FM.
