Schneider Announces 2019 Congressional Art Competition Winners

April 29, 2019

Student artists from Glenbrook North High School, Round Lake Area High School and Waukegan High School take top prizes

Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) announced the winners of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition in Illinois's Tenth District at a public exhibition at the College of Lake County in Grayslake on the evening of Wednesday, April 24. Forty students from eleven high schools across the district submitted artwork on the theme of "Character."

Three experienced art professionals—Lori Nerheim, co-founder of the Waukegan Arts Council; Amy Amdur, founder of Amdur Productions; and Bob Lossmann, Professor of Art at College of Lake County — judged the entries anonymously, without seeing artists' names or schools.

The first place entry will be displayed in the Capitol for the next year, along with winning works from every district in the county. The second place entry will be displayed in Congressman Schneider's district office in Lincolnshire, and the third place entry will be in his DC office.

An album of all 2019 student submissions is available on Congressman Schneider's Facebook page.

Maya Epstein of Glenbrook North High School earned first place for her piece titled "Head Above Water." As this year's winner, Maya will receive two round-trip airline tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines to Washington, DC and have the opportunity to attend the Congressional Art Competition award ceremony later this spring.

Angie Morales of Round Lake Area High School received second place honors for her work titled "Calavera."

Edgar Bueno of Waukegan High School placed third with his work "Negative Light."
