Schneider Calls for Resignation of Acting Navy Secretary Modly

April 7, 2020

Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL) released the following statement following statement:

"I call on Defense Secretary Esper to immediately relieve Acting Navy Secretary Modly of his current position, and to remove him from any role of responsibility for Navy personnel following his wholly improper treatment of Captain Crozier and his equally inappropriate remarks to Captain Crozier's crew on the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

"As the Representative for Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, where every enlisted sailor begins their Navy career, and as the father of a young Navy officer, I appreciate and commend Captain Crozier's dedication to the safety and health of his command. He demonstrated through deeds and words the Navy's highest standards of ‘Honor, Courage, Commitment' — for his country, for his mission and for the men and women in his charge.

"I have no doubt history will reflect well on Captain Crozier's actions, as it has on the USS Theodore Roosevelt's namesake, who during the Spanish American War wrote to his commanding officers warning of the dangers of yellow fever and malaria to the men under his command in Cuba."
