Schneider Hosts First “STEM Scholars” Visit with Area High School Students
Schneider and students toured Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling to learn about STEM careers in airport and airline industries
This Saturday, Congressman Brad Schneider and area high school students toured Chicago Executive Airport to learn more about airport logistics, air traffic control, and the STEM skills need for a career in the aviation industry.
"My passion for science was sparked at an early age through extracurricular programs, so I am excited about the opportunity to expose the next generation to new opportunities in STEM, such as aerospace, and the skills they need to pursue them" said Schneider. "I enjoyed spending time with bright young people from our district, who had great questions during our tour. I hope today's visit helps spur an interest in these topics and understanding of the doors that a STEM education can open."
"I'm also grateful to Chicago Executive Airport and their team for being such welcoming hosts to our students," added Schneider.
This was the inaugural event for the Tenth District STEM Scholars program, which aims to connect highly-motivated students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with hands-on learning experiences throughout our district. Twenty-three students were selected from area schools in a highly competitive application process earlier this summer.
This was the first of four planned visits for Schneider and group to STEM-related businesses and facilities during the 2018-2019 school year. On these visits, students will have the chance to participate in discussions with local employees, business owners, and educators, and learn more about the STEM career opportunities in our backyard.
