Schneider Hosts Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony at U.S. Capitol with Holocaust Survivors
Today, U.S. Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL) hosted a Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol to allow Members of Congress to hear firsthand testimony from survivors of the Holocaust and to remember the lives cut short by antisemitism and hate.
Schneider speaks at a Holocaust Remembrance Day event in the U.S. Capitol.
"It is said that by hearing testimony of a witness to the Holocaust, we become witnesses as well," said Schneider. "We all share the urgent responsibilities to remember the victims and continue to fight antisemitism, and all forms of hate, in our own time. I am grateful that many of my colleagues chose to join in today's ceremony by lighting candles and reciting the names of victims."
Following the testimony of Susan Warsinger, Members of Congress joined with survivors to light six candles in memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The event concluded with Members of Congress reading names of the victims of the Holocaust to remember their lives and preserve their memory.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer participated and read the names of victims of the Holocaust.
More than thirty Members of Congress attended the event, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD).
Survivor Susan Warsinger, who was born in Germany in 1929 and immigrated to the United States in 1941 following the Kristallnacht pogrom, shares her life story with Members of Congress.
Schneider co-hosted the event with his congressional colleagues on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council (Board of Trustees of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum), U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch (D-FL), David Kustoff (R-TN), John Lewis (D-GA), and Lee Zeldin (R-NY).
