Schneider Statement on Bipartisan Vote to Keep Government Open

September 30, 2023

WASHINGTON— Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement following the passage of a 45-day continuing resolution to keep the government open:

“Today, Democrats led the way in averting a reckless, unnecessary government shutdown—while also preventing devastating Republican cuts to critical federal programs. Earlier this week Republicans voted for, but could not pass, a temporary spending bill with nearly 30%  across the board cuts: 30% cuts to community safety, 30% cuts to school nutrition, 30% cuts to foreign military assistance (including a $1 billion cut in funding to Israel). Thanks to Democrats standing strong, the government will remain open and the vital programs Americans rely on, from Social Security to Medicare to our national parks, will continue to operate.

“Now, I pray that Speaker McCarthy learns the lessons of this week’s Republican debacle and recognizes the obvious truth: the only way to fund the government is for Republicans and Democrats, in the House and Senate, to sit at the table, negotiate in good faith, and do the work of the American people. The next 45 days should be guided by bipartisan efforts to responsibly keep the government funded.”
