Schneider Statement on IL AG Filing a Federal Lawsuit Challenging USPS Changes

August 19, 2020

DEERFIELD, IL – Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement in response to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul filing a federal lawsuit challenging drastic operational changes at the U.S. Postal Service that threaten critical mail delivery and could undermine the national election in November in which record numbers of Americans are expected to vote by mail due to the COVID-19 pandemic:

"Since announcing this morning our Congressional letter calling for an investigation into whether Postmaster General DeJoy violated the law, I am pleased that our Illinois Attorney General is filing just such a federal lawsuit. It's exactly the kind of law enforcement action we need to protect our Postal Service and guarantee the fairness and freedom of our elections. Also, while I am pleased that Postmaster General DeJoy is suspending changes to service, simply delaying his actions is insufficient. It still remains for Mr. DeJoy to fix the damage he's already done. America still needs an investigation and oversight into this politically motivated sabotage, and the Postal Service needs a reset to have the necessary resources to deliver our mail on time. That's why I look forward to helping pass the ‘Delivering for America Act' this weekend."
