Schneider Statement on Impending Government Shutdown
Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement ahead of an impending partial government shutdown, which will begin at midnight:
"The American people deserve better. President Trump is once again putting politics ahead of the public good and hurting working families with his decision to shut down our government. This is not a game; it has real world consequences. By insisting on an ineffective border wall instead of accepting a reasonable bipartisan funding compromise, the President will force hundreds of thousands of families to go without pay over the holidays and create even more unnecessary economic uncertainty.
"We are a nation with incredible potential, being limited by our political dysfunction. I urge President Trump and my Republican colleagues to do their duty and end to this self-created crisis."
Background:
As he did during previous federal government shutdowns, Schneider will return his salary to the U.S. Treasury until funding is restored. He is also a co-sponsor of H.R. 1794, the Hold Congress Accountable Act, which would ensure Members of Congress are not paid during a government shutdown.
