Schneider Statement on Investigation of Ammonia Spill

April 26, 2019

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the below statement following calls with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regarding the spill of anhydrous ammonia in Beach Park, IL:

"While my first thoughts remain with the individuals hospitalized as a result of this spill, it is critically important that we urgently begin the investigation to determine how this accident occurred and what steps are necessary to prevent similar disasters in the future.

"This morning, I spoke with officials at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as well as the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). I am pleased that both agencies are taking this incident seriously and have already dispatched teams on-site in Beach Park to investigate. I look forward to reviewing their findings as soon as possible, particularly any recommendations to improve the safety of hazardous materials transport.

"Yesterday's emergency response demonstrated the professionalism and bravery of our first responders. One firefighter is still hospitalized in critical condition, along with six local residents. On the call, I requested that both federal agencies closely examine the efforts of our first responders, including assessing whether our local departments were properly notified and fully prepared with the necessary training and equipment to safely respond to this incident. We have a responsibility to provide our first responder heroes, who put their lives on the line to save others, the resources they need to keep themselves safe."
