Schneider Statement on New Treasury Guidance on Electric Vehicle Sourcing

March 31, 2023

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement in response to the Treasury Department’s new proposed guidance on the new clean vehicle provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Congress has primary responsibility for establishing our country’s trade policy, not the Treasury Department. Today’s new guidance from the Biden Administration introduces a concerning, expansive definition of Free Trade Agreement that ignores the intent and prerogatives of Congress.

“Congress is eager to electrify our nation’s vehicle fleet in a way that expeditiously reduces greenhouse gas emissions and effectively protects workers and their families with enforceable labor provisions and environmental standards.

“I, along with my Ways and Means Democrats colleagues, stand willing and ready to work with the Administration to implement the ground-breaking Inflation Reduction Act consistent with Congressional intent that builds on our values-based trade policy. Congress has a role in this process.”
