Schneider Statement on Release of Khashoggi Report

February 26, 2021

WASHINGTON — Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) – member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) – released the following statement in response to the White House's release of a previously classified intelligence report on the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi:

"The report released today starkly states what we've long suspected: the brutal murder of journalist and American resident Jamal Khashoggi was approved at the highest levels of the Saudi leadership— specifically naming Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

"As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC), I believe it is critical that the people responsible for this heinous murder be held to account and that press internationally are protected. I look forward to working with my colleagues on HFAC to ensure justice is served for this murder and other flagrant human rights violations.

"It is also worth highlighting that, by releasing this report and announcing its actions, the Biden Administration is demonstrating its commitment to transparency, human rights, and global leadership – long-held bedrock U.S. principles in foreign affairs that were previously ignored in the Trump Administration."
