Schneider Statement on Report that IRS is Investigating NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre
WASHINGTON —Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement on a Wall Street Journal report that the IRS is investigating longtime NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre for criminal tax fraud:
“Last year, after learning of egregious abuses by CEO LaPiere, I called upon the IRS to investigate the NRA amid reports that revealed how he was misusing the organization’s tax preferred status. We followed that with a report detailing NRA abuses and further calls for investigations. I am pleased to read today’s reporting that the IRS is investigating potential criminal tax fraud for NRA President Wayne LaPierre. This is an important first step in an investigation that I expect will likely reveal a pervasive corrupt climate at the NRA, requiring direct action by the IRS and the Justice Department.”
The House Ways & Means Committee has jurisdiction over the IRS and federal tax law.
Since May 2019, Schneider has been calling for the NRA to be investigated for its blatant abuse of its tax-exempt status. In February 2020, he released a report on the NRA’s abuses, which followed on testimony from a former IRS official that the NRA’s conduct “absolutely” raised questions about its tax-exempt status.
In September, Schneider led 33 Ways and Means and House Oversight Democrats in calling for new scrutiny into the NRA’s tax-exempt status.
