Schneider Statement on Supreme Court 2020 Census Citizenship Question Ruling

June 27, 2019

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (D-IL) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision on the 2020 Census citizenship question:

"This decision is a victory for our democratic system and for our Constitution which requires the Census to count ‘all persons.' The Court's ruling effectively halts the Trump Administration's plans to include a citizenship question in a craven and partisan effort to depress participation and skew the results.

"While this is a positive development, our fight is not over. It is vital that the Census count is as accurate as possible because the collected data helps direct more than $675 billion in funding for health care, food security, transportation, education, and other essential services every year.

"To the residents of the Tenth District, I have a simple message: be counted. We must ensure the Census accurately measures our neighborhoods and does not shortchange federal resources or representation for our communities."

Background:

In April 2019, Schneider hosted a community briefing on the 2020 Census in Waukegan, and is scheduling a second community briefing on this topic for August 2019.
