Schneider Statement on Trump White House Announcement to Effectively End DACA

July 28, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the following statement in response to the Department of Homeland Security's announcement that the Trump Administration will reject new applicants to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and wind down legal protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought into the country as young children:

"President Trump's cruel choice to effectively end the DACA program once again puts the future of Dreamers in jeopardy, blatantly flies in the face of the Supreme Court's recent decision, and recklessly subverts our nation's rule of law. The U.S. Courts have spoken. The Administration must accept new DACA applications. In Illinois' Tenth District alone, there are more than 6,000 young people eligible for DACA. They are part of the very fabric of our communities. They are our friends, co-workers, and neighbors. I was proud to vote last year to pass the Dream and Promise Act (H.R.6) to create permanent status in the United States for DACA recipients and a path to citizenship. I will not stop fighting for them and for the communities of which they are an important part. The American people overwhelmingly support justice for our Dreamers - it's time for the President and Senate Republicans to listen to their calls and join in support of this commonsense legislation."
