Statement on Farm Bill Passage
Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the below statement following the passage of H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 or “Farm Bill,” 213-211:
“Today’s partisan passage of the Farm Bill is the GOP majority’s most recent effort to enact harmful cuts to crucial safety net programs. We know that SNAP leads to better health and education outcomes, yet an estimated 2 million families would see their benefits reduced or eliminated entirely under this legislation.
“This Farm Bill also continues the Trump Administration’s assault on environmental protection. It shortchanges conservation programs that protect the Great Lakes, eliminates efforts to limit agricultural runoff, and fails to invest in rural communities, including those hurting under the growing national crisis of opioid addiction.
“Previous Congresses have always sought and found common ground in a bipartisan Farm Bill that offers assistance and security to farmers and needy families alike in a way that both Democrats and Republicans can support. Thankfully, today’s extreme House bill is dead-on-arrival in the Senate. In the days ahead, I urge my colleagues in the majority to abandon their one-sided approach and work across the aisle to find a constructive way forward to meet our nation’s critical agricultural and nutritional needs.”
