Statement on ‘Minibus’ Appropriations Vote
Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10) released the below statement following his vote against H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act of 2018.
“Funding the government to provide for our nation’s defense is a fundamental job for the Congress. I take this responsibility seriously and in the past, I have voted for spending bills that do so in a way that is balanced and productive.
“However, the appropriations bill considered today went too far and were loaded with several extreme riders that I could not support. In particular, this bill funds President Trump’s wasteful and counterproductive border wall, and undercuts the future health of our environment. Further, the irresponsible funding levels included in the Act would trigger $72 billion in automatic, across-the-board sequestration cuts that will hurt our defense preparedness.
“I urge congressional leadership and my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to return the appropriations process to regular order and approach our funding duties in a more responsible manner.”
