Statement on President Trump’s Ban on Transgender Americans Serving in Military

July 26, 2017
Press Release

Today, Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, released the following statement:

“I am profoundly saddened by President Trump's arbitrary ban on transgender people from our nation's military, which dishonors the service and sacrifice of the thousands of transgender troops currently serving our country with distinction and valor. Rather than excluding good people, we should welcome all who volunteer to honorably wear the uniform and are qualified to carry out the duties and responsibilities that entails.

“Just last week, I joined with the majority of my House colleagues to defeat a hateful amendment attempting to bar transgender service-members access to health care services.  I was proud of that moment, as I am proud of the progress we have made to increase inclusion in the mosaic that defines us as a nation.  There is still much work to do, and as we struggle toward full equality, I will continue to fight all attempts like this that move us backwards.”
