Statement on U.S. Airstrikes in Syria

April 13, 2018

Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement:

"The United States and the international community have a moral responsibility to condemn and hold to account Bashar al-Assad's use of chemical weapons.

"Tonight's military strikes undertaken with European allies can only be effective if part of a comprehensive strategy, long overdue, to hold the Assad regime accountable, and bring forth the conditions for a political resolution to the war.

"America must not be drawn into an open-ended conflict. Any commitment for a 'sustained' response, as implied by President Trump, requires Congressional debate and authorization.

"Tonight, I am particularly grateful for the service of our men and women in uniform, and I will continue to monitor the situation closely."
