Reps. Schneider and Mast Lead Bipartisan Letter Urging Strategy to Counter Iranian Expansion

November 17, 2017
Press Release
More than 40 Members of Congress request Administration develop plan to prevent permanent Iranian military presence in Syria

Today, U.S. Representative Brad Schneider (D-IL) released a bipartisan letter led with Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) urging the Trump Administration to present Congress with a strategy to prevent Iran’s regional expansion.

The letter to Secretary Tillerson, notes Iran’s expanded military presence in Syria and support to the Assad regime and terrorist proxies. This recent expansion into Syria poses a threat to regional allies, including Israel and Jordan, while benefiting Iranian-sponsored terrorist organizations including Hizballah with more training, equipment, and other resources.

“A permanent Iranian presence in Syria is unacceptable,” said Schneider. “I am concerned Iran is using the conflict in Syria to gain a military foothold on the doorstep of Israel and other regional allies, and supply terrorist organizations like Hizballah with deadly weapons. Preventing Iran from establishing a permanent military presence in the region must be a bipartisan priority, and I was proud to co-lead a letter with Congressman Brian Mast and more than 40 of my colleagues from both sides of the aisle urging the Administration to present Congress with a strategy to address this threat.”

Earlier this year, Rep. Schneider introduced H.R. 4012, bipartisan legislation to require a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran’s support for proxy forces.  The bill would also require the Administration to report to Congress with a strategy to prevent Iran from expanding its power in Syria and Lebanon.
