After four nominations and three roll call votes, the House finally has a new Speaker, Mike Johnson of Louisiana. I know Speaker Johnson well after serving with him on the House Judiciary Committee for two years. Following his speech on the floor, I greeted him in the well to say congratulations and commit to seeking common ground for the good of the country.

I am back in D.C. to once again wait on my Republican colleagues as they decide to either agree amongst themselves on who they want to be Speaker of the House, or determine that they are willing to work with Democrats on a bipartisan solution to the crisis. We have now been without a Speaker, and consequently without a functioning Congress, for three weeks and counting.

I returned to Washington yesterday after observing the Yom Kippur holiday at home on Monday. Being home for the weekend, I was also able to visit the district with stops in North Chicago, Wheeling, Grayslake, and Antioch. My conversations this weekend, and throughout the month, have mostly centered on my efforts to prevent a reckless, unnecessary government shutdown at midnight, September 30.

One of the highlights of summer is that the Cubs, despite early season predictions, are very much in the playoff hunt. Meanwhile, across the Tenth district, schools rush to complete their summer construction projects as students return with high hopes for a great year ahead. I was honored to join North Chicago Community School District 187 for their annual school year kick-off.

Yesterday was, to say the least, a busy news day. For the third time since March, former President Donald Trump was indicted—this time on charges related to his accused role in the efforts to overturn the election on January 6, 2021.

It’s going to be hot in the Chicago area this week. Forecasts have temperatures above 90 degrees every day, with cooler temperatures over the weekend. This is pretty much the weather we would expect here at the end of July, but not so much elsewhere around the country and around the world.
